A LOVE STORY

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN GWEN WALKS IN?

An excerpt from Wedding PhD by Minister Phillip Waring

In the first week of this new job, I decided to observe the single adult Bible study before taking over teaching it. The room had a row of chairs that backed to the furthest wall, where I sat away from the teacher. However, everyone entering the classroom walked in front of me.

The church had two worship services, with a few singles playing in the orchestra during the first service. The single adult class was held during the second worship service. Arriving late from playing in the orchestra, a tall, beautiful woman entered the classroom. Walking by me with her instrument case was the first time I ever saw Gwen Nielson. It took everything in my character to keep me from making elevator eyes as she walked by. Taking the wind out of my sails, she went right over to sit with her boyfriend.

One day the church office alerted me that one of the singles was in the hospital. As ministers, we visit hospitals whenever a member has been admitted. As the single adult minister, I always called the hospital first to ensure the individual was still there before going. Sure enough, Gwen had already been released.

I called her at home immediately to check on her condition. It turned out to be nothing serious. But during the call, she informed me that she had just broken up with her boyfriend. I barked, “Hang up! I’ll call you right back.”

When I called her back, I said, “Gwen, this is not a call for church business.”
